Naresh Agrawal 'regrets' remark on Jaya Bachchan after Sushma's rap

Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Agrawal being welcomed by Union Minister Piyush Goyal as he joins BJP

"I haven't taken it kindly", Agrawal said.

Meanwhile, facing a backlash for belittling Jaya, Agrawal on Tuesday offered his regrets but said his comments were twisted by the media.

While speaking to ANI, he clarified that his intentions were not to hurt anyone.

Expressing his regret, Agarwal said that he didn't intend to hurt anyone and he's taking his words back if it did so.

Agrawal, who joined BJP on Monday, called Jaya "a dancer" while expressing his displeasure over the SP's consideration of the actress as the Rajya Sabha member over him.

Naresh Agrawal is known to make controversial comments, including one that mocked Hindu gods and which created an uproar in parliament previous year.

The party decided that solitary candidate would be Bachchan, and this angered Agarwal, hitherto a loyalist of former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

All the people in the country respect Bachchan and take pride (in her acting skills) she has been a parliamentarian with him for so many years. "The women's commission should also look into it".

Agrawal represents the Hardoi constituency at the Upper House, and at the expiration of his term, the party has chosen to field Bachchan from that seat.

Referring to Jaya Bachchan's selection as Samajwadi Party's Rajya Sabha candidate, he had said, "Films mein kaam karne wali se meri hesiyat kardi gayi, unke naam par humara ticket kataa gaya, maine isko bhi bahut utchit nahi samjha".

By the time he got the news, the BJP had already announced its list of eight candidates from UP, leaving no scope for him to get a ticket.

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj has slammed Naresh Agrawal for his "improper" statement about actor-tunred-politician, Jaya Bachchan calling it unacceptable. "In fact, let it be a reminder for us that when a woman's honour is challenged we stand as one in our condemnation irrespective of our politics", she said in a tweet.

Naresh Agrawal, who has also had a stint in the Congress, is not new to controversy.
