DeVos Suggests CBS Edited Her '60 Minutes' Interview

Betsy DeVos on “60 Minutes” proves she's a master of nothing

According to a CBS This Morning tweet, a Department of Education spokeswoman also responded to the public criticism, saying DeVos is "quite aware" that the state of MI needs to improve for its students. When asked why schools are still underperforming there despite her efforts, she gave non-answers that showed she had no data and no valid argument.

In an interview with CBS' 60 Minutes that aired Sunday night, DeVos said years of federal investment in public education had produced "zero results" and that American schools were stagnating and failing many students.

Instead, one stunningly flat-footed exchange went viral nearly immediately, calling into question her knowledge about public schools, school choice and the very agency she leads. The decision to arm teachers to prevent school shootings is a part of the Trump Administration's initiative to improve school safety. Overall, Devos struggled to answer basic questions that pertained to schools in her home state.

Their structure can vary by state and can focus on particular subjects - like science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) - and can even reside in the same building as a traditional public school.

Stahl mentioned MI schools' poor performance, something a University of MI study appeared to confirm previous year. "Scores are stagnant. Students need more options, and we must rethink our approach to education".

STAHL: Have the public schools in MI gotten better?

"I don't know. I don't know". "But again, I think this is an issue that is best decided at the local level by communities and by states".

STAHL: The whole state is not doing well.

And don't make things worse by trying to claim that there are "lots of pockets" where things are going well.

That, in turn, led to this exchange, which began when Stahl said taking funds away when a child moved to a private or charter school, leaves his or her former public school with less funds to perform its mission. They've made it clear that they care more about a system, one that was created in the 1800s, than they care about individual students.

So on 60 Minutes, CBS' Lesley Stahl obviously asked DeVos about the MI public school system, which is one of the worst in the country. We understand that DeVos called public schools a "dead end". "There is no doubt about it".

When you come from a family wealthy enough to ensure you never had to step into a public school until you'd already used your inherited wealth to undermine your state's entire public school system, wealthy enough to foot the seed money for a private army, and wealthy enough to buy you a cabinet position, it might be understandable that you see society the way that the DeVoses do. "The public schools here are doing worse than they did".

Alternatively, she might have pointed out that many factors explain why a school system might sink or rise and that pointing to school choice alone offers an incomplete picture.

DeVos responded, "Maybe I should". And when Stahl redirected, DeVos talked right over her. After her full year of on-the-job learning, though, DeVos' appearance Sunday on "60 Minutes" showed no diminution in her ineptitude. I don't know. But I'm committed to a process that's fair for everyone involved. Michael Bennett (D-Colo.) noted that charter performance in Detroit was nothing to brag about.

According to the Education Department, charter schools are entities that receive public funding but operate with greater autonomy than traditional public schools.
