White House promises quick tariff decision

White House chief economic adviser Gary Cohn right and chief of staff John Kelly return to the White House Feb. 1 2018 in Washington D.C

Unlike Cohn, Liddell might be more willing to cooperate with the president's populist policy agenda.

Mr. Moon went out of his way to credit Mr. Trump with each breakthrough and personally appealed to Mr. Kim's sister to engage in talks with the United States.

Trump notoriously consumes hours of cable TV news every day, and he regularly live-tweets about stories he watches on the "Fox & Friends" morning program on Fox News.

"This is Gary Cohn's last meeting in the Cabinet", Trump said Thursday at the meeting. Trump didn't back down and is set to sign the tariffs into law on Thursday.

Departures are normal after a President's second year, but the circumstances of Mr. Cohn's leave-taking as top economic adviser are anything but normal after only 14 months.

Mr Trump's announcement last week of his plans to impose the tariffs sent USA stock prices tumbling and came after an intense debate within the White House between Mr Cohn and other advocates of free trade, on one side, and protectionist advisers such as Peter Navarro on the other, White House sources said.

A senior administration official said those exemptions, however, could come at a price to other countries. After joining General Motors in 2010, he helped guide the automaker's recovery from bankruptcy, the report said.

Politically, the key question is whether the rest of the Republican party follows him.

During a White House press briefing on Wednesday, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders hinted at Cohn's reappearance in another capacity.

Trump mentioned the possibility of tariffs on the campaign trail.

Navarro, Cohn's rival, is a leading candidate to take over from him as trade adviser, a prospect...

Cohn announced his resignation earlier this week after publicly disagreeing with Trump's decision to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

It is the latest in a series of high-profile departures from Trump's team.

Navarro, excluded from Trump's trip to Asia last fall, was sometimes seen walking the West Wing halls at night. They could also try to pass a veto-proof bill to block the tariffs from going into effect, although getting two-thirds support in both the House and Senate could prove very hard. Other congressional leaders have called for measures that would directly target China rather than imposing a blanket steel tariff, which has been pushed by Navarro. The president's actions, so far, are not likely to evoke such widespread disruption, but even more recent tariffs of the sort have cost American jobs. Chung and Suh had originally been scheduled to meet with President Trump on Friday.
