Gary Neville has tweeted a message of support to Jamie Carragher

Sky are set for talks with Carragher who has apologised to the 14-year-old girl

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher claimed he was "goaded" by a Manchester United fan, which made him throw spit at the man's teenage daughter. "No excuse apologies" wrote the former Liverpool defender in a tweet.

Carragher who was seemingly not pleased with Liverpool's bitter loss to arch-rivals United, as per Mirror phoned the girl and her father to apologise. Both men wind down their windows and the father shouts: "Unlucky Jamie lad".

The 14-year-old daughter of the Manchester United fan, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, can be heard saying she was hit in the face by the spit.

"I was goaded 3/4 times along the motorway while being filmed and lost my rag".

But Shreeves was having none of it and said: "No I haven't". When I was brought up as a kid, spitting was that and I'll never do it again. "This is a bad stain on my character and my career".

JC: What I would say is there's no doubt what I've done is disgusting. "There's not a person in the world who can condone spitting no matter what's gone on".

'I didn't (see the girl), to be honest, she was leant back. As I've said, it's hard to explain, the moment of madness - four or five seconds where I've lost it, basically - and I've made a huge mistake and I've apologised for that.

Greater Manchester Police said on Monday they were not investigating the incident, and had received no complaint from the man driving the auto Carragher spat at.

This incident, however, has been viewed dimly by the broadcaster's hierarchy and they will speak to him over the next 24 hours to hear his views.

Carragher met with bosses of the broadcasting giant in London on Monday in the wake of the incident which took place on Saturday afternoon. They have been dragged into this media storm by myself because of my actions.

Will he stay on as as a Sky pundit?

What the future holds for Carragher as a Sky Sports pundit remains to be seen, with the general public very much divided over whether he should keep his job or not.

The dad yesterday denied abusing Carragher: "When we spotted him I was just shouting his name".

"I love my job and would love the opportunity to stay".

But in his statement, TV3 Executive Director Peter Nørrelund is said to have told the British press that the pundit will be out of tomorrow's Uefa Champions League games as investigation is on-going.

"I want to listen to his version".

"It is a big story in England and I wouldn't have thought that sending him to Old Trafford would have been a good idea".

I've just watched Carra23 say sorry.

Former Manchester City footballer Joey Barton also chimed in on talkSPORT, saying "Look, he's made a mistake". "He's massively passionate about football and he's overstepped the mark and shouldn't have reacted".

"It's the only time I've reacted like that, it's the only time I'll ever react like that".

"I do think both are in the wrong".

The girl's 38-year-old mum expressed her anger at Carragher, who has a daughter of his own, for spitting on the girl, calling it "the lowest of the low".

"It's right to apologise and Sky Sports are right to have taken the decision they have".
