Helicopter Crashes in East River Off Manhattan, Officials Report

At least two people were killed and one was rescued after a helicopter went down Sunday evening in New York's East River, according to Eric Phillips, the NY mayor's spokesman.

Police and firefighters have arrived at the scene and divers have entered the water, the New York City Police Department said on Twitter.

It wasn't immediately clear how many people were on the helicopter. It is reportedly upside down in the water.

The New York Post described the chopper as a "tour helicopter", and reported it plunged into the river near Gracie Mansion.

A spokesman for Mayor Eric Phillips confirmed the deaths.

Three passengers were taken to hospital in a critical condition, according to New York Police.

The New York City Fire Department tweeted that its members were with police at the location near 91st Street in Manhattan.

"It kind of hit sideways and just flipped over", Brianna Jesme, an Upper East Side resident told Reuters TV.

This is a developing story.
