ESPN puts best spin possible on the Sean McDonough demotion

NFL football player Peyton Manning accepts the icon award at the ESPY Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles

The New York Post's Andrew Marchand reports the National Football League "did not like" McDonough's work on the telecast.

Tessitore has worked at ESPN since 2002 and will become the sixth play-by-play voice for "Monday Night Football" - joining Keith Jackson, Frank Gifford, Al Michaels, Mike Tirico and McDonough.

Manning, who retired following the 2016-17 season after leading the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl victory, is highly sought after to be an on-air personality by many networks, including FOX, who are still in the running for Manning's services.

It appears ESPN's "Monday Night Football' will see a complete overhaul in the broadcast booth for the 2018 NFL season". Now he will be the new voice of "Monday Night Football".

So the move of Sean McDonough from play-by-play duties on Monday Night Football to college football represents an obvious demotion.

"Over the past two years, as I watched college football on television, I realized how much I missed it", said McDonough. "I look forward to reuniting with ESPN's college football team where I have so many close friends in front of and behind the camera". Earlier in the day, the Post reported that Peyton Manning had turned down a reported offer of $10 million to serve as the MNF analyst. Marchand notes that he's never called an National Football League game, while also implying that the National Football League itself wasn't particularly enamored with McDonough as the voice of one of its signature properties.
