Coveney to campaign for repeal of abortion law

The government approved the referendum bill in Dublin on Thursday, coinciding with International Woman's Day.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the referendum, which campaigners on both sides have long awaited, is about allowing women to make major decisions for themselves.

The language is very broad, giving rise to concerns that Ireland will be pushed to legalize abortion without restriction.

On the subject of women and girls who become pregnant through sexual violence, the bishops said: "A child conceived following rape is also a person".

"It should be a day that we ... challenge those in power to provide the necessary supports so that no woman ever feels she has no choice but to go down the road of abortion", Cullen said, according to the Catholic Herald.

In addition, it would allow abortions up to birth in cases of fatal fetal abnormalities or risks to the mother's life or health.

Abortion is a topic that is so influenced by what is going on in our own lives, and by our own experiences of fertility and pregnancy and family planning, but this International Women's Day in Ireland, we will be having these very hard conversations, to ensure that the May referendum makes a real difference to the lives of all women and girls here. "The way the day is being exploited is a total betrayal of women and their unborn babies".

The Government will reveal a policy paper later outlining what it wants the laws on abortion to be if the 8th amendment is repealed. Moreover, in nearly all these 40 countries, once the time-period for legal abortion on a woman's request or on broad socioeconomic or psychological grounds ends, doctors can also legally perform abortion for one or more exceptional reasons also specified in laws or regulations. The referendum date was set for May 25.

Irish pro-life feminists held a protest outside the Irish government on the day Health Minister Simon Harris brought the proposal to the Dáil (Irish parliament).

"I share the desire to see the unborn protected in every way possible", Harris said, contradicting his own actions. After becoming the first country to approve marriage equality by referendum, the eyes of Europe and the world will again be on Ireland, in the run up to this referendum on the Eighth Amendment.

A change to the law would be a monumental step for Ireland, where since 1983 it has been estimated that 170,000 women have left the country to terminate pregnancies. Legalizing abortion will not help mothers, it will only pressure them to kill their unborn babies.
