Arrests as Supporters of Richard Spencer Clash With Protesters Outside Michigan University

MSU Police Capt. Doug Monette confirmed several arrests were made but didn't provide a total number, Michigan Live reported. Some charges include weapons violations as well as hindering and obstructing, he said.

Lot of people screaming at police.

Protesters shouted "Nazis go home" as they confronted a group of Spencer's supporters who arrived at the university's Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. The officers wore helmets and clutched batons.

The violence happened before the event where at least 150 protesters faced off with a small number of Spencer supporters. Police say they're protecting the first amendment - for both sides.

Franklin said Spencer's ability to speak on MSU's campus, along with the views he has established for himself, would be met with resistance.

Spencer popularized the term "alt-right" to refer to a fringe movement that's a mix of white nationalist and anti-Semitic beliefs.

"He is full of hate - that's all", she said. At one point they say he allegedly pointed the gun at the protesters in the other vehicle.

"This was really an opportunity for us to strengthen our community and for people to have real positive feelings about who we are in the East Lansing area", said Rabbi Amy Bigman, a leader in the Interfaith Clergy Association of Greater Lansing, which sponsored the event. "This is our free speech being exercised".

News 10 and other media outlets were denied access inside the speech.

"The ideas that they espouse: genocide, white supremacy, fascism, are anti-American and risky to our people, to our nation, to Americans", he said.

No one severely injured as of this point. Spencer planned to speak at the University of Cincinnati this week but it fell through after the school demanded an $11,000 security fee, Spencer's attorney told The Associated Press.

But back in January, the university announced it would not happen this semester, which ends in April.
