Stephen Hawking says there was absolutely nothing before the Big Bang

Physicist Stephen Hawking sits on stage during an announcement of the Breakthrough Starshot initiative with investor Yuri Milner in New York

In a video published by Popular Science last Friday in which he was interviewed by popular astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson, Hawking explained that he did not believe there was anything before the Big Bang, using a geographic analogy.

There are plenty of theories about how our universe began, but the one most accepted in the scientific community is that the universe came into existence in a single moment known as the Big Bang - which happened approximately 13.8 billion years ago. He says the boundary condition of the universe is that it has no boundary.

Hawking stated that time was likely in a bent state, located in the nearly infinitely small quantum foam of the singularity before the big event occurred, noting that time was distorted, approaching closer to nothingness, but never becoming nothing. One of the famous theory of is the Big Bang theory.

Considering our universe has been expanding for billions of years, it's tough to accurately pinpoint why it was created, but Stephen Hawking has a theory and surprisingly it's not entirely dissimilar to religion-based faith.

"The Euclidian space-time is a closed surface without end like the surface of the Earth".

The legendary physicist says that whatever happened before the Big Bang, the cataclysmic explosion of matter, exists outside our current understanding of time and space. The ordinary real time as we know now shrinks infinitely as the universe becomes ever smaller but never reaches a definable starting point.

In the show names Star Talk Tv show, Hawking stated "One can regard imaginary and real-time as beginning at the South Pole, which is a smooth point of space-time where the normal laws of physics hold". This implies that there was absolutely "nothing" before the Big Bang which could give an output of "something" from "nothing" which never existed. "It just seemed that way from mankind's perspective", Hawking said. His theory lies upon the assumption that the universe has no boundaries, the Xinhua reported late on Sunday.

It's one of the big philosophical questions: if the Big Bang was the beginning of the universe, what was there before?

At the Big Bang, the matter available in-universe was converted the hot and dense spot of the matter.
