'Black Panther' Crosses $500 Million Domestic With $65 Million 3rd Weekend

The mediocre reception for Red Sparrow marks the second misfire for Lawrence following last fall's disastrous Paramount release, mother! .

In other box office news, Hollywood's awards season came to a close on Sunday with mixed results.

Worldwide markets are also rocking for Panther with this weekend contributing an estimated $56.2M pushing the overseas cume to $396.6M and the global haul to $897.7M. It is in 14th place now, as of last weekend.

The Disney/Marvel collaboration, starring Chadwick Boseman as the superhero king of an idyllic if fictional African country, took in an estimated $65.7 million for the three-day weekend, website Exhibitor Relations reported. The breakdown is $501.1M in North America and $396.6M at the global box office.

With Panther continuing its dominance, this week's new releases fought an uphill battle for ticket sales.

At it's current speed, Black Panther could beat Avengers to become the biggest domestic hit of the MCU and beat Jurassic World and Titanic, which earned $652M and $659M respectively, to claim the throne of the third highest grossing movie in domestic box office numbers.

Jennifer Lawrence's new spy thriller Red Sparrow, directed by Francis Lawrence, debuts at number two on the new list with $17 million (GBP12.3 million), while moviemaker Eli Roth's Death Wish remake, starring Bruce Willis as a vigilante Chicago, Illinois surgeon enters the box office countdown at three with $13 million (GBP9.4 million). The Jason Bateman/Rachel McAdams comedy remains an appealing choice for those who've already seen Black Panther and think Red Sparrow or Death Wish are too dark for date night. "Peter Rabbit" continues to be a good draw for family audiences, also adding $10 million to bring its worldwide total to $100 million today.

As we mentioned earlier, the big release next weekend is Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time" adaptation. It's got $164.6 million after 11 weekends and has one of the highest, if not the top, opening weekend to final multipliers of all time. Annihilation came in sixth with $5.7 million.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $134.1M this weekend which was down 20% from a year ago when Loganopened at number one with $88.4M; and down 6% from 2016 when Zootopiadebuted in the top spot with $75.1M.
