A day before the counting of votes cast in the February 18 Tripura assembly elections, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ruling CPI (M) sounded confident to form the next government in the north eastern state.

Tripura went to polls on February 18, while elections were held in Meghalaya and Nagaland on February 27.

The exit polls have predicted an end to the 25-year-longLeft rule in Tripura.

Polling to Charilam (ST) seat in Tripura was postponed till the 12th of next month due to the death of CPIM candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma.

In Tripura, over 92 per cent voters had exercised their franchise in the elections, setting a new record.

The Congress may want to look away now: According to C-Voter, its vote share will be 19.7 per cent, and 4 seats.

Meghalaya had used VVPATs for the first time during this elections. The BJP- NDPP is excepted to win 27-32 seats according to the JannKiBaat-NewsX exit poll while the C-Voter exit polls predict that it will win 25-31.The ruling NPF is excepted to lose power in the state with JannKiBaat-NewsX exit poll predicting that it will get 20-25 and the C-Voter giving it 19-25.

Ahead of the counting of votes in the state, the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been deployed along the India-Bangladesh border. Tripura has a Left Front government under Chief Minister Manik Sarkar; the Congress led by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is in power in Meghalaya, and in Nagaland the Naga People's Front with BJP's support is in power under the chief ministership of TR Zeliang.

The BJP had earlier announced that it would go solo in the Meghalaya and it did not announce any pre-poll alliance, while its NDA alliance partner the NPP is also contesting elections alone.

From that perspective, the best way to interpret the Tripura exit poll results by the three agencies is to identify the "consensus view", which in this case is the fact that the polls are a two-cornered contest between the Left Front and the BJP-IPFT alliance, and that it is likely to be a rather close contest between the two alliances.

The JaanKiBaat-News X exit Poll gives 23-27 seats for the NPP, 13-17 seats for the Congress while the BJP and others are predicted to win 8-12 and 2-6 seats respectively.

The Trinamool Congress has fielded 24 candidates. In Nagaland, while NPF contested in 58 seats, NDPP in 40 seats and debutant National People's Party (NPP) in 25 seats.

C-Voter predicts that the Congress win 0-2 seats, while the other exit polls predict that the party will not be winning any seats in the state.

NewsX, a national TV channel predicted a victory for the BJP alliance in 35 to 45 seats, 14 to 23 seats for the CPM and Left Front parties and one seat for "others".

In Nagaland, the BJP has joined hands with the NDPP that was floated by former chief minister Neiphiu Rio.
