Lawsuit: Google Hiring Practices Discriminated Against Whites, Asians

According to a lawsuit filed by former Google engineer Loretta Lee the tech giant’s ‘bro-culture’ lead to routine sexual harassment and lewd comments at work

This latest lawsuit comes from one of Google's former recruiters, after he claimed he was sacked for ignoring company orders to reject white and Asian male job applicants. Per the Wall Street Journal, Arne Wilberg served as a Google recruiter for seven years (four of those years for YouTube directly), during which time he says the company implemented hiring quotas for minorities, or what the company called "diversity candidates". A lawsuit filed last month by a former Google engineer claims that the company's "bro culture" contributes to a toxic environment where women are regularly subjected to sexual harassment. "We have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity", a Google spokesperson told RT.com, adding that the company is unapologetic about hiring a wide group of qualified candidates as it helps the tech giant "build better products".

Lawsuits against the Silicon Valley companies are on the rise as ex-employees come out to speak about the harmful and discriminatory culture prevailing at some of the biggest organizations. It's also alleged that management deleted emails and other records about diversity requirements late past year.

Arne Wilberg worked at Google and YouTube as a recruiter, contractor, and full-time employee for almost a decade.

Wilberg alleges that several employees complained to Google about the company's hiring policies, but were either ignored, transferred, or demoted.

In March 2017, a YouTube staffing manager shot an email to the recruiters stating: "Please continue with L3 [level three] candidates in process and only accept new L3 candidates that are from historically underrepresented groups". The former staffer said Google - YouTube's parent company - invoked "clear and irrefutable policies" meant to exclude white and Asian men in hopes of increasing the brand's diversity last spring.

When presented with orders to cancel level-three software engineering interviews with anyone not either female, black, or Hispanic, and to purge applications from non-diverse employees in the hiring pipeline, Wilberg refused and faced retaliation as a result, it is claimed. During that period, he claims the company put a freeze on hiring White and Asian men while also setting hiring quotas for so-called "diversity candidates".

According to Wilberg's lawsuit, Google's human-resources department began investigating YouTube's hiring practices in the spring of 2016.
