Varicose veins may increase risk of blood clots, lead to vascular diseases

Varicose veins may be an early warning sign of potentially deadly blood clots suggests a study published Tuesday

"The magnitude of the association between varicose veins and PE and PAD was small, and, therefore, it may be more likely due to residual or unmeasured confounding", Chang and colleagues wrote.

Though they considered the health records of over 425,000 adults, the researchers say that even more work is needed to understand whether this relationship is one in which varicose veins directly cause blood clots or whether the two conditions simply have a similar origin.

The incidence of PAD was also significantly higher in the varicose veins group (10.73 versus 6.22 per 1,000 person-years).

They are easily recognised as bulging, knotty, purple or blue veins that are most commonly seen in the legs. Chang hypothesized that since patients with varicose veins have increased inflammation, the inflammatory processes may cause abnormal blood clotting.

However, it's now believed that if you have varicose veins, you may be at risk for Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT), a potentially deadly clot that forms deep within the body.

Writing in the JAMA medicinal diary, they stated: 'Patients with varicose veins have expanded levels of provocative and ace thrombotic markers'.

Response: Varicose veins are not merely cosmetic or symptomatic concern. Obesity and a family history of the condition also increases the risk.

'Varicose veins are once in a while connected with genuine wellbeing dangers.

Important to the study design was the fact that the three endpoints were analyzed separately, i.e., if a patient with DVT later developed PE or PAD, these were counted as cases in the analysis of the other endpoint (s). Yet "fewer studies have established an association between varicose veins and peripheral arterial disease", he said. Furthermore, endovenous ablation provides quick recovery which in turn is expected to create demand for varicose vein treatment.

"True healthy people are not included in this study at all", Kindzelski said, since the researchers drew data from medical records using codes.
