Russian Federation vetoes anti-Iran UNSC resolution

A missile that the U.S. Department of Defense says is confirmed as manufactured in Iran and the Pentagon says was fired by Houthi rebels from Yemen into Saudi Arabia

The text, drafted by Britain and backed by the United States, received 11 votes in favor and two abstentions but was blocked by Russia's veto.

The UN Security Council resolution, in which Iran has been named as an accomplice to the missile strikes of Yemeni rebels against Saudi Arabia, has been blocked by Russian Federation, the news agencies reported.

A proxy war is playing out in Yemen between Iran and USA ally Saudi Arabia.

China and Kazakhstan abstained, while Bolivia also voted against the measure.

The approved resolution made no mention of Iran.

Iran has always denied arming the Houthis and has instead accused the U.S. of faking evidence or has pointed the finger at other nations.

Kuwait's U.N. Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaiba is the current council president.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said he opposed the draft, saying it should be about renewing the work of experts monitoring sanctions against Yemen rather than denouncing Iran.

Iran UN envoy also stated that the war in Yemen is going on with American and British weapons, which have plunged the country into a crisis.

A report by a United Nations panel of experts in January accused Iran of violating arms embargo on Yemen after claiming that missiles fired by the Houthi revolutionaries at Saudi Arabia a year ago - in retaliation for deadly strikes staged by Saudi-led coalition- were made in Iran.

"Russia doesn't like the outcome of certain expert panel reports", Jonathan Allen, UK deputy ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters before the vote was scheduled to take place.

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a Russia-tabled draft that will see a technical extension of sanctions against Yemen.

"Today, Russia protected the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Iran", said Haley, who was traveling to Honduras.

Both Tehran and Sana'a have repeatedly rejected the allegations as a fabricated scenario, and said the armed forces of Yemen have strengthened their missile power on their own.

Since March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf countries, supported by the United States and the United Kingdom, has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request.

The UN estimates that 17 million people in Yemen - 60 percent of the population - are in need of food aid, of whom 7 million are on the brink of starvation because of the conflict.

Haley has taken a hawkish stance on Iran, accusing Tehran of sowing instability in the Middle East and failing to live up to its commitments under the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran has accused Washington of "participation and responsibility" for what it says are "atrocities committed by Saudi Arabia in Yemen".
