Transgender Wrestler Booed During Final in Texas

Mack Beggs of Euless Trinity smiles in the closing seconds of a Class 6A girls 110-pound semifinal bout during the UIL State Wrestling Championships at the Berry Center on Saturday

It was his steroid therapy treatments while wrestling girls that stirred a fierce debate about competitive fairness and transgender rights last season.

A wrestling parent filed a lawsuit a year ago to block Beggs from wrestling girls, but the suit it was dismissed.

"That (the criticism) didn't stop me from competing". "That didn't stop me from competing. No matter who you put in front of me, I am a champion".

"It sure as hell didn't stop me from doing what I wanted to do in the past, and it won't stop me from what I want to do in the future", Beggs said.

18-year-old Mack Beggs, who is a a senior at Euless Trinity High School just north of Arlington, Texas, entered the state tournament last week with a flawless record.

"It definitely felt different", Beggs told the Dallas Morning News, describing her experience of winning her second title.

"He has so much respect for all the girls he wrestles", Beggs' mother, Angela McNew, said, according to ESPN. "People think Mack has been beating up on girls. Even though I was put in this position, even though I didn't want to be put in this position, even though I wanted to wrestle the guys, I still had to wrestle the girls".

However, there has been a loud backlash from some sections of the wrestling community. It just comes down to technique, who has the most heart.

After the video appeared online, fans have come to support Beggs via the medium of Twitter.

"McNew did not allow media interviews with Beggs prior to the state meet", TheBlaze's Teri Webster reported.

Beggs, who has gone 132-9 over three seasons, including an undefeated record for the past two years, has a scholarship offer to wrestle on a male team, and would have preferred to wrestle against men in high school.

Despite all the backlash, Beggs entered the ring and capped a ideal 36-0 season.

Though he has repeatedly asked to wrestle in the boys' devision, Beggs is forced to wrestle girls because, under University Interscholastic League rules, athletes must compete in the gender division that corresponds to their birth certificates.

Under Texas law, athletes are required to compete against other athletes who have the same gender on their birth certificates.

It was done to help schools determine competition, said Jamie Harrison, the UIL's deputy director.
