United Airlines ends discount for travel to NRA annual meeting

We All Want the Same Thing

A call to boycott the National Rifle Association (NRA) became the top trend on Twitter as users of the global social media platform demanded that a variety of companies sever ties with the lobbying group.

Following the lead of students nationwide inspired by the activism of survivors of the Parkland massacre and citing "customer feedback", the First National Bank of Omaha stood up to the National Rifle Association yesterday, saying that it would not renew the contract for its NRA-branded Visa card.

On Tuesday, ThinkProgress, a liberal-leaning think tank, published a list of some two dozen "corporate partners" that offer incentives to NRA members.

Both MetLife and Chubb have announced they have terminated discounted insurance plans for NRA members as well.

An insurance company, Chubb told Reuters on Friday it will end its participation in an insurance policy for NRA members, called "NRA Carry Guard".

The NRA credit cards are part of a larger business in which the bank issues cards branded with organizations' logos, such as the sporting-goods store Scheels and the Best Western hotel chain.

The announcements are the latest examples of companies ending their partnerships, sponsorships, and discount programs with the gun lobbying group following the deadly February 14 shooting at a Florida high school which left 17 dead.

The mass killing focused renewed attention on the NRA, which is credited with blocking gun-control measures for years through millions of dollars in political campaign contributions and pressure from its large membership base.

From the mouths of babes comes power, especially when the words are a demand that major USA corporations stop doing business with the NRA.

The exodus of corporate names, ranging from a major insurer to auto rental brands and a household moving company, occurred after the NRA launched a counter-offensive against a student-led campaign for tighter USA gun ownership laws. By late Friday, the security companies Symantec and SimpliSafe left, MetLife, moving company Allied and more began to cut ties.

Over 20 businesses offer some type of incentive to NRA members in the US, according to reports.

FedEx has not said anything publicly about its NRA association in recent days; when reached around 4:30 ET on Friday afternoon, a company spokesperson said he had no information to provide. But with major gun-reform legislation a pipe dream at the federal level (for now), the business world may have more leverage to change the way guns are bought and sold than anyone else. As business connections between Enterprise and the NRA began to surface, people began tweeting at the rental vehicle company using the #BOYCOTTNRA hashtag.

Enterprise followed a few hours later on Thursday.

In a statement posted to its Twitter account, United said it would no longer offer a discounted rate for NRA members traveling to their annual meeting. Dallas, like every American city and community, is populated by NRA members. Hertz, Avis Budget Group and TrueCar would soon join Enterprise and end their NRA discounts.

Companies are throwing themselves headfirst into the gun debate by having agreements in place with the NRA.

The NRA did not respond to Sky News' request for comment. IN got hit hard by threatened boycotts in 2015 when then-Gov.
