Measles Cases Are Skyrocketing in Europe as More Parents Shun Vaccines

Unvaccinated young children are at highest risk of contracting measles

In February, the World Health Organization released a report showing 16,000 measles cases in the European region for 2017, a four-fold increase compared to the previous year.

Lower rates of vaccination may have been behind the spike, the organization stated.

The highest numbers of affected people were reported in Romania (5,562), Italy (5,006) and Ukraine (4,767).

Dr Jakab insisted that the elimination of both measles and rubella "is a priority goal that all European countries have firmly committed to". "This short-term setback can not deter us from our commitment to be the generation that frees our children from these diseases once and for all". These figures follow a record low of 5,273 cases in 2016. Anyone can develop measles, but it's more likely to affect young children, especially those who are poorly nourished. And almost 3 days later, a flat red rash starts appearing on the body of infected person.

The rash looks like small, red-brown blotches and can make a person feel very unwell.

People who remain unvaccinated contribute to measles rates not only by exposing themselves but also by exposing others. Most Norwegians born before 1960 have had the disease and are therefore immune.

Dr David Elliman, paediatrician at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, added: "Although the uptake of the both doses of MMR vaccine is high in United Kingdom, because measles is so infectious, it is not yet high enough to stop [the] outbreaks we are seeing".

Dr Valeria Herdea, president of a professional medical organisation in the country, told the website: "We still have in the media, gossip shows with different celebrities of dubious taste, who provide all kind of "magic methods" for child immunity, without vaccination, but who capture public attention much more than scientific information".

More recent studies have found no link between the jab and autism or bowel disease. The most serious complications include blindness, encephalitis - an infection that causes brain swelling and can lead to deafness or learning difficulties, severe diarrhea, and severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia.

The biggest outbreaks recorded a year ago were in Romania and Italy.

Norway's public health agency said Wednesday it had registered three cases of measles in the Nordic country this week as outbreaks of the disease are soaring across Europe.

The measles, mumps and rubella vaccination is given as part of the routine NHS childhood vaccination programme.

At least two of the children also had developmental delays before they were vaccinated, yet Wakefield's paper claimed they were all "previously normal". "This emphasizes that it is necessary to be vaccinated.if one has not had the disease", he said.
