Swype Keyboard for Android and iOS has been Discontinued

Swype Keyboard on Android and iOS will No Longer Receive Updates

If you're not satisfied with the stock keyboard app on your smartphone, you always have an option available to opt for a third-party one. Brings back memories, right? Bad news for anyone that's having issues with it on a new phone.

XDA Developers then reached out to the company to confirm the statement, and were told that development on Swype+Dragon has been stopped.

Nuance has announced that its Swype keyboard for iOS has been discontinued and has also confirmed that the Swype keyboard with Dragon voice recognition combo app for Android is getting no further support. "We're sorry to leave the direct-to-consumer keyboard business, but this change is necessary to allow us to concentrate on developing our AI solutions for sale directly to businesses", the Swype Product Team's response read. We know for sure that the iOS version was discontinued at the beginning of this month. Among the established alternatives is Swype, which has been available for almost five years on Android and over three on iOS. Even if most of its loyal users claim that it performs better than other apps, the download numbers might prove otherwise. The keyboard was purchased by Nuance back in 2011 and in 2014 the keyboard made its debut on iOS.

In the consumer space, Google especially has also doubled down on its own Gboard keyboard (which includes a dictation feature). When the developers stop rolling out updates and support the app, they may not provide assistance in case their database of content gets hacked or if hackers gain access to user data due to lack of security updates.

For now, the Swype app is still available on the Google Play store; and chances are it won't be fully taken down.

Either way, if you look through any of the recent reviews for Swype, it appears as if the app is struggling.
