Aussies record highest T20 chase

Apart from a surprise series defeat to Pakistan last month New Zealand have been almost impregnable at home in recent times

Australia chased 243 - a world-record in T20 internationals - to clinch a stunning victory over New Zealand and offer England a surprising reprieve in the Tri-Series.

A combination of Eden Park's short boundaries and a flat pitch produced a batsman's paradise that frustrated the bowlers of both sides and set records tumbling.

Australia made a flying start in reply, with openers David Warner and D'Arcy Short racing to 51 without loss after four overs.

New Zealand's 243 for six was the seventh highest global total of all time in the format, and 29 more than Australia had ever conceded, but the visitors somehow took the win with seven balls remaining.

When Guptill scored his 58th run, he overtook McCullum's tally of 2140 runs and now has 2188 runs in 73 T20Is. New Zealand will rely on his blazing form to produce a match-winning knock in the must-win encounter.

The fifth T-20 between Australia and New Zealand were very much special in Triangular series.

The result leaves New Zealand needing to defeat England on Sunday in Hamilton to secure a re-match against Australia in Wednesday night's final at the same venue.

Although Ish Sodhi bowled Warner for 59 before Chris Lynn well caught low down by Guptill off Colin de Grandhomme, New Zealand were unable to slow the onslaught.

New Zealand will once again rely on Guptill and Colin Munro, their openers, to provide quick runs at the top of the order.

Tye and Kane Richardson picked up two wickets apiece, while Billy Stanlake and Ashton Agar chipped in with one wicket each.

"To put 240 on the board and to lose the game, it's a little bit disheartening, but we haven't really got a lot of time to dwell on it", said Guptill after the game.

The run chase eclipsed the 236 for six West Indies achieved in beating South Africa in Johannesburg in 2015.

New Zealand were in a commanding lead, batting first and reaching 220 for three, 16 off of 14 balls for Chapman, and it appeared that they were going to be taking a healthy lead into the break with a real target for Australia to beat.

"ICC should ban play and force NZ to play on a regulation size ground", Maxwell tweeted during the match.

But Australia fought back at the death, conceding just 48 from the last five overs - a relative improvement that would later prove crucial.
