Oxfam sex scandal: Charity shops hit by 123 sexual harassment claims

FLord Hague Remain supporter who now wants 'unity and good order' in withdrawal from EU

Oxfam's Deputy Chief Executive Penny Lawrence resigned on Monday over the handling of the scandal and the United Kingdom government threatened to cut funding to the charity's projects.

Oxfam chair of trustees, Caroline Thomson, said in response to the statement by DfID: "Oxfam is in total agreement with the secretary of state's further proposals".

We have complete confidence in Mark Goldring, he's doing a brilliant job and Oxfam's a wonderful organisation which is going through some hard times, she told Sky News.

Oxfam has been accused of covering up claims that its aid workers used prostitutes in Haiti in 2011.

The Charity Commission said Oxfam may not have "fully and frankly disclosed material details" when it first investigated allegations of misconduct in 2011.

Although the allegations refer to events before his tenure, Mr Goldring has since been directly dragged into the controversy after a whistleblower claimed he failed to act on concerns raised to him in 2014.

Asked if the charity was anxious about a drop in financial support and public trust following the allegations, Oxfam Ireland said it was "committed to earning and maintaining the trust of our supporters" through an "open and transparent" organisation and a "robust whistleblowing policy".

More organizations that have relationships with Oxfam like Marks and Spencer and the Duke of Edinburgh Award have also conveyed their concern about the scandal and are considering pulling support for Oxfam.

"Like us, she is appalled at what happened and is determined to do what is best for Oxfam and the people we exist to help".

What I recognise now, with the severity of issues as they have emerged, is that we should have resourced that team up faster as we now have, indeed, done.

He said he would not resign as he was not in the post in 2011, and added: "But if our board turn round and say "actually you are not the right person to lead forward" then I of course would resign immediately".

Oxfam was in the country offering relief following a devastating 7 magnitude quake that killed over 200,000 people in 2010.

In a tweet in French, Haiti's President Jovenel Moise called charity's actions in Haiti an "extremely serious violation of human dignity".

Representatives from Oxfam have yet to say whether the four people now working in its dedicated safeguarding team are full or part time members of staff.

The charity watchdog is now set to begin its inquiry into Oxfam.

Miss Mordaunt described the behaviour of the aid workers as "appalling" and said Oxfam must demonstrate "the moral leadership necessary... to rebuild the trust of the British people".

Asked about Evans's allegations, Oxfam said her work had spurred the organization into taking concrete steps to improve the way it deals with "safeguarding" issues. Lawrence said in her statement.

While there are no allegations of underage sexual behaviour in relation to the recent revelations, Mr MacLeod said Britain's National Crime Agency had warned since 1999, predatory child sex offenders targeted the developing world.

The whistle-blower who exposed the sex abuse scandal at Oxfam has told how she "begged" senior staff to act after learning that vulnerable teenage volunteers were working alongside unvetted adults in the charity's United Kingdom high-street shops.
