NZ vs England 4th Tri Series T20 match in numbers

England suffer Twenty20 defeat to New Zealand leaving tri-series final hopes in tatters

'New Zealand had a lot of plans but I thought England looked a bit headless in the field with the ball'.

Sodhi, Boult and Mitchell Santner took two wickets apiece, while Southee claimed one. Despite some fielding blemishes, the Black Caps were always ahead of the game.

Two slumping sides meet in tonight's tri-series Twenty20 match in Wellington. Pace off the ball kept him in check but, for some reason, England abandoned the tactic and insisted on hitting him with pace at the end of his innings.

Disease and Wellington's unusually warm summer were blamed for the lengthy barren patch, and stand-in England captain Jos Buttler gladly offered it to his bowlers in the hope it would play tricks for the quicks.

The New Zealand captain went into the game low on T20 runs.

Mark Wood, who returned to England's side along with Liam Plunkett, replacing Tom Curran and Liam Dawson from the side which played at the MCG, made an early breakthrough by removing Colin Munro, caught at fine leg off a short ball.

Newcomers Mark Chapman (20) and Tim Seifert (14 not out) provided the late fireworks on their global debuts.

This was his day.

Williamson, who saw his own place in the side questioned by former worldwide Simon Doull and came into the match managing a niggling back injury, was happy to take his share of good fortune at Wood's expense.

However, Guptill and Williamson were then invited to click through the gears by England's attack: both passing 50 - off 31 and 34 balls, respectively - with a six and then celebrating with a six off the next ball.

Guptill took a liking to Adil Rashid's legspin, pitching into the dirt, and slog-swept him for three sixes to get New Zealand rolling.

A third successive defeat for the English, including two to Australia, means a trans-Tasman final will be assured if the Black Caps can beat Australia in Auckland on Friday.

They got there without Colin de Grandhomme, whose effortless lofted drive first ball looked like six, but was instead plucked out of the air by a brilliant one-handed Jordan grab.

Jason Roy's short-form blues continued after the turnaround, caught off Tim Southee for eight to make it five single-figure dismissals in a row dating back to last summer.

Earlier, Williamson discovered how much can hinge on one ball.

England gave a decent account of themselves with the bat, Alex Hales racing to 47 and Dawid Malan making a neat 59, but a regular tumble of wickets left them 184 for nine at the close.
