Flu season in 'second wave'

Flu killing 4000 every week and is responsible for 1 in 10 deaths in the US right now - with Tamiflu shortages reported

This year's flu season keeps getting worse. "While we are seeing flu cases in Schuyler County, so far this year we are not seeing more than we have seen in prior years", Schuyler County Public Health Director Marcia Kasprzyk stated.

Panelist Yonatan Grad, MD, also of Harvard, said that a flu vaccine that can "elicit strong immune responses" continues to be one of the challenges.

Malas is happy to help any student looking for guidance during this intense flu season. Schuchat noted that overall hospitalizations are now significantly higher than what has been seen for this time of year since CDC's current tracking system began almost a decade ago in 2010, and "the rate is approaching the final rate of hospitalizations that we observed at the end of the active 2014-2015 flu season". The Center for Disease Control reported 63 pediatric deaths nationwide through week five. Forty-eight states are still reporting high activity, with OR and Hawaii as the exceptions.

Researchers will then predict which strain we'll see in the US.

More than 60 children have died from the flu and 1 in 13 doctor visits last week was for flu-like symptoms.

Cases of influenza-like activity also continued to increase, with 7.7 percent of patient visits related to flu-like illness during the week ending February 3, up from 7.2 percent of visits the previous week.

State officials announced new efforts Monday to protect children in need from the deadly flu epidemic.

A January article in the New England Journal of Medicine found a "significant association" between respiratory infections, including the flu, and acute myocardial infarction - the medical term for a heart attack.

"The only time we've ever had visitor restrictions was back during the H1N1 season", said Dr. Lyn Ranta, a pediatrician.

And that's why its even more important to take preventative actions every day throughout flu season.

"Hopefully the B strain we are shifting to is covered in the vaccine", Schulz said.

"During this most recent week, 80 percent of the viruses reported by public health labs were influenza A, and 20 percent were influenza B", she observed.

The 2017-2018 flu season has been severe, largely due to the prevalence of the influenza A (H3N2) virus causing widespread flu activity across the entire continental United States.

Health officials in CT say the flu epidemic will get worse before it gets better, and they're taking steps to try to stop the virus from spreading.

The lamps can kill the virus while still remaining safe around people.

This flu season is already one of the worst seasons on record and may not reach its peak for several more weeks to come. Norman Edelman, senior scientific advisor for the American Lung Association, told HealthDay. There are also side effects of the flu vaccine, including soreness, redness or swelling where the shot was given, body aches, and low grade fevers. "With kids, its about 50% have some other condition, usually asthma, neurological disease, or obesity".
