Olympics: US ski star Shiffrin adjusts her schedule

On Friday, the rearranged slalom is due to be staged as the men compete in the super-G. As of now, she would have zero days in between, racing three days in a row from Thursday through Saturday. Instead, she will begin on Wednesday - weather permitting, of course - in the slalom, a race she has dominated for five years, and then ski again the next day. Defending champion Mikaela Shiffrin of United States can become the first Alpine skier, male or female, to win successive Olympic gold medals in the slalom.

After several delays in the schedule, the event was eventually called off as the hurricane-like winds made it impossible for the athletes, including the U.S. rising star Mikaela Shiffrin, to compete in such weather conditions, reports Efe.

The giant slalom that was scheduled for Sunday night was moved to Wednesday night, which will be Shiffrin's first race.

The wind gusts have been strong enough to push people around; by evening, metal detectors outside venues and all signage were laid down on the ground, to prevent them from being picked up by the gusts.

While the remainder of Tuesday's session indicated that safety was not an issue on the downhill run, Jansrud questioned whether the integrity of the event had been maintained.

"Well, it compresses the schedule, so it makes for a more hectic five, six days as we approach into the speed events", USA women's head coach Paul Kristofic said.

"The event is something I've been really looking forward to all year, so I hope I can go out and deliver", said Taylor.

Already facing a bit of a time crunch because of all of the weather issues, organizers kept pushing back the first run of the two-run slalom until eventually deciding to call it off about an hour after the start time.

The 25-year-old lived up the pre-Olympics hype with a scintillating performance in an absorbing three-run final culminating in a six-man shootout to add gold to the silver he won fours years ago.

"It's shortened downhill course with the wind playing its role", Jansrud, one of the two athletes' representatives for the race, said after clocking the fourth fastest time.
