African National Congress (ANC) leader and South Africa deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, on Sunday revealed at the launch of the Mandela centenary celebrations in Cape Town that he was employing the late statesman's strategy of being "careful" when dealing with hard matters.

The young Zuma said the family had no direct knowledge of how the talks between Zuma and Ramaphosa were going.

Ramaphosa said he understands South Africans want the country's leadership to resolve its problems and that the national executive committee (NEC) "will be doing precisely that".

The committee could recall the president from office, though he would be under no constitutional obligation to obey the order.

"People don't want us to think through issues".

Madiba addressed thousands of supporters at the Grand Parade that afternoon, and Sunday's event was meant to emulate that.

The party of Nelson Mandela was marking the 28th anniversary of the day the late leader walked free from prison in the city of Cape Town.

It was his first speech as free man, and a key moment in South Africa's modern re-birth as apartheid white-minority rule crumbled.

Allow Ramaphosa to use his personality and art of leadership to manage, Mantashe said in the SABC interview.

Zuma's presidency has been marred by corruption scandals, slow economic growth and record unemployment that have fuelled public anger in sharp contrast to national optimism after Mandela's release.

- Dispute over exit deal?

He has faced increasing pressure to quit since December, when Mr Ramaphosa replaced him as leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

Zuma has expressed his desire to continue ruling the country until the end of his state presidential term in 2019.

"The centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela gives us an opportunity for renewal and rebuilding", Ramaphosa said, noting that the party and the county was emerging from a hard period.

"If the president of ANC says wait for me, I am still talking to President Jacob Zuma, there is no need to insult him", Mantashe said.

One case relates to 783 payments he allegedly received linked to an arms deal before he came to power.

The decision follows talks between the ANC's top six officials and Zuma on Saturday night to discuss the transition of power, said the people, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Opposition parties are calling for a parliamentary vote of no-confidence within days. Many reporters were camped outside Zuma's official residence in Pretoria.

In 2008, the party pushed out then-president Thabo Mbeki over allegations of abuse of power.
