Winter Olympics will miss star power of Lindsey Vonn when she's gone

Former Olympic gold medal winner Alpine skier Bode Miller smiles during an interview in Innsbruck Austria

The most successful woman skier in World Cup history, American Lindsey Vonn says she wants to end her Olympic career on a high when she gets her fourth Games underway next week.

The 33-year-old, who won downhill gold in Vancouver 2010, said: 'I want so badly to do well for him.

She also won super-G bronze at Vancouver 2010.

Vonn's only regret is that her grandfather, Don Kildow, won't be able to watch her compete in the country in which he served in the USA military.

Her first race in South Korea is the super-G, scheduled for February 17.

"I really want to put an exclamation point on my career". Three world championships in the slalom, medals that hang in her room back home in Colorado because, she said, "I had dead space on my wall and I wanted to fill it with something, and they look pretty". I really had hoped he'd be alive to see me. "I wish he was here and able to watch me, but I know he's watching".

"It's what I think about first thing when I wake up and what I think about when I go to sleep", she said.

Oh, the Olympic paparazzi will love this: Lindsey Vonn brought the current love of her life to the Winter Games.

Vonn, a four-time overall World Cup champion, has notched up 81 World Cup victories said she has Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark's record of 86 race wins in her sights.

"And I think that I needed to change something". She's usually in the hotel room whenever I'm racing.

It's just a girl and her dog on a great big Olympic adventure. When I get mentally exhausted, I just get more emotional. Now, one more time, she encounters a different set of circumstances.

"In Lenzerheide I was emotional and crying and frustrated and not really myself so that was a sign to me that I was just a little bit too exhausted", she said of her final giant slalom World Cup race before the Games, where she finished seventh.

"It's the Olympics, getting sixth place doesn't do a whole lot of good here", Miller said.

"I've always been in awe of the Olympics, especially 2002", she said.

She estimates that she spent the equivalent of about three years on rehabilitation from various injuries; while Vonn reiterated Friday she plans to ski another season to eclipse Stenmark, when she mentioned the word "retirement", it was in the context of how long her knees will hold up. As he raised his family on a farm in rural Milton, Wisconsin, he built a tiny ski hill with a tow rope. I'm not going to be nervous. "She enjoys sleeping a majority of the day".

Vonn said her increased mental strength really comes into play when she's in the starting gate.

Not so much physically exhausted - although that is a constant factor with the daily grind of the World Cup circuit - as she was simply mentally wiped out.
