BC government boosts minimum wage to $12.65 in June

Gradual wage increase

Addressing the issue of poverty, he said, will involve more than wages, and many of those earning the minimum wage on the North Shore are not folks feeding their families but rather are part-time employees living at home with well-to-do families.

The four increases between 2018 and 2021 represent a 34% increase over four years. "The fact is it's good for the economy to raise the wages of low wage workers".

The province estimated the increases will impact approximately 94,000 workers.

Commenting on the plight of minimum wage workers he said: "They shouldn't have to rely on foodbanks".

"But making 500,000 low paid workers who now make less than $15 wait until June 1, 2021 to climb above poverty wage rates is not fair".

Minimum wage was first initiated in B.C.in 1918.

"As we saw in Ontario, increasing the minimum wage is only one part of the puzzle".

Thompson says it's been a long time since he's seen a dentist, and in emergencies he has to borrow money from friends and family.

"People who were in domestic violence and they got paid leave", says Hogan.

"It's an exploitative way of operating a business".

The Fair Wages Commission was established in October 2017 as an arm's-length government body to help guide public engagement on how B.C. should achieve a $15-an-hour minimum wage, and also the timeline for implementation. The NDP government had by 2021, though it initially abandoned that deadline.

While BC Federation of Labour President Irene Lanzinger said she's glad about the planned increases but disappointed the timeline is too slow, Premier John Horgan characterized the government's plan as a "methodical, thoughtful and balanced approach to raising minimum wages here in British Columbia".

The Fair Wages Commission's report to Labour Minister Harry Bains is dated January 17.

The premier made the announcement at a Vancouver coffee shop February 8.

JJ Bean Coffee Roasters, which has stores in Toronto and Vancouver, raised its prices to offset the cost.

"All these things combined with minimum wage increases are going to help the working poor", she said. This will be increased in stages beginning June 1, when it will rise by $1.30 to $12.65.

On June 1, there will be a $1.30 an hour increase, bringing the minimum wage to $12.65 an hour.

The figures in Nunavut and NWT are now $13 and $12.50, respectively. "It contributes directly to our promise to make life more affordable for British Columbians". More than half of those workers are university and college graduates over the age of 25.
