Top DHS official says Russian hackers infiltrated United States voter systems in 2016

Russia successfully hacked into voter rolls during 2016 election

Duke said at a Senate hearing on DHS reauthorization that continuing resolutions lead to administrative burdens because they compel the department to make major spending decisions in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year when funding becomes more stable.

The Russians were probing the voter rolls for a variety of reasons.

Jeh Johnson, who was a top official at DHS during the election, told NBC that "2016 was a wake-up call and now it's incumbent upon states and the Feds to do something about it before our democracy is attacked again".

USA officials have said there is no evidence that any states' voter registration rolls were tampered with or at all altered by the foreign intrusions. Johnson says the nation's electoral systems are a part of the nation's federally protected critical infrastructure and could be targeted by hackers.

"There's no doubt that some bad actors have been poking around", then-FBI Director James Comey said in September of 2016.

Her comments came the same week Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed that hackers were already targeting the upcoming midterm elections.

Manfra disagreed, saying, the states "have all taken it seriously". "Whether they affected the outcome (of the election) is another question, but they meddled, and that's risky for democracy".

A special counsel was appointed shortly after to look into possible collusion between the Trump camp and Moscow. So far, he has indicted a few members of Trump's inner circle, including his former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

"The Russian government has made a project of turning Americans against each other". Until the truth is known about the Trump/Russia relationship, and Russia's role in the 2016 election, Trump will occupy the White House under a cloud of illegitimacy.
