Right-Wing Media Explodes Over New FBI Texts, Misrepresents the Facts

Mark Levin on FISA scandal: 'Hillary Clinton paid for a warrant. That's the simplest approach to put it'

It's unclear exactly what the text is referencing.

In the new text message chain from September 2, 2016, Page mentioned Obama in the context of a briefing for then-FBI director James Comey.

The new information revealed by the Senate Homeland Security Committee about the FBI's alleged mishandling of the Hillary Clinton e-mail case - including the FBI text "POTUS wants to know everything we're doing" - raises "alarming questions about the extent of President Obama's involvement with FBI investigations", said House Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) in a February 7 statement.

That's according to a report published online Tuesday by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and first reported by Fox News early Wednesday morning.

The cable giant's coverage followed a report released by Sen. It also raised concerns about the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while secretary of state - a matter which the Justice Department inspector general also is exploring. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, is disputed by a source familiar with one of the FBI official's thinking who said that those texts referred to Obama's broader interests in issues of potential Russian interference in the election, not the Clinton investigation.

A memo released by the House Intelligence Committee last week showed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice signed off on Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) applications in 2016 to obtain warrants from the special FISA court to surveil - spy on - Trump campaign associate Carter Page.

Collectively, the texts show the two officials disliked Trump and feared what he might do as president, and they freely intermingled talk of politics with talk of work.

"We need to get to the bottom of this and find out what [Obama] knew and when he knew it", he added.

Though numerous messages already had been made public, President Donald Trump quickly seized on their release, writing on Twitter, "NEW FBI TEXTS ARE BOMBSHELLS!".

"I can tell you why you're having that meeting". We have a strict line, and always have maintained it, previous president. I do not talk to FBI Directors about pending investigations. For example, on election night of November 8, 2016, Strzok describes the results as "f***ing terrifying" and Page responds with "Omg, I am so depressed". But September 2, 2016 was just days before Obama confronted Russian President Vladimir Putin over Russia's meddling in the presidential election.

Former President Clinton's counsel Lanny Davis said President Trump "cannot say no" if special counsel Robert Mueller asks to interview him.

July 2016: The FBI begins investigating Russia's interference in the United States election.

"Later that same month, Peter Strzok - the same guy who ran the Clinton investigation - opens the Russia-Trump investigation", Jordan continued.

The actual message in question was sent from Strzok to Page on September 2, 2016, wherein he explains he is drafting talking points for D - presumably then-FBI Director James Comey - because "POTUS wants to know everything we're doing", meaning then-President Barack Obama.

September 5, 2016: Obama meets with Putin and reportedly discusses Russian meddling in the U.S. election. In a message dated September 28, Strzok told Page that "hundreds of thousands of emails" were turned over to the Southern District of NY by Anthony Weiner's attorney. Weiner was married to Huma Abedin, a top Clinton aide.

Former FBI Director James Comey - quite famously and controversially - announced the end to the Clinton email probe in July 2016.

However, according to The Wall Street Journal, the text was referencing Obama requesting information about the ongoing Russian Federation investigation and not the investigation into Clinton's emails.
