Justin Trudeau backtracks on 'peoplekind' comment, calls it a 'dumb joke'

Justin Trudeau has drawn criticism online after interrupting a woman and asking her to use "peoplekind" instead of "mankind".

"We like to say "peoplekind", not necessarily "mankind", because it's more inclusive", replies Trudeau.

Mr Trudeau's intervention prompted applause from the audience, but critics have accused him of "mansplaining" and making up a word.

During the course of her question, she said that maternal love would "change the future of mankind". Those positive responses weren't reflected online though where people took the PM's interjection as mansplaining (which it certainly seemed to be) or just the ramblings of another insane left-winger pushing his politically correct agenda. British media personality Piers Morgan also wrote about the remark, sarcastically saying, "Mankind ended last night".

"Out of context it doesn't play so well, and it's a little reminder that I shouldn't be making jokes even when I think they're amusing".

On Wednesday, Trudeau said that the joke "played well in context" of the setting - but not out of context.

Jokes included pictures posted of comic superhero Batman changing his name to "Batperson" and suggestions that Manitoba become "Peopletoba".

At one point Tuesday during a testy question period exchange, deputy Tory leader Lisa Raitt urged the prime minister to "person up".

He is expected to appear Wednesday afternoon at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics for a conversation with its founder and director, David Axelrod, who was once an adviser to former President Barack Obama.

The two leaders are not scheduled to meet during Trudeau's four-day trip to the US this week.

The goal of the trip is to focus on trade and cultural ties, but a successful visit would surely be a re-election boon for Trudeau, who already enjoys a high degree of popularity among Canada's 1.2 million Indo-Canadians.
