'Inside Job' Suspected After LeT Terrorist's Daring Escape From Srinagar Hospital

In an audacious attack, terrorists attired in Pherans (Cloak) helped a Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist escape by firing at the police party escorting him to hospital here on Tuesday, leaving two policemen dead.

Jhutt, along with five other detainees from Srinagar Central Jail, was taken to hospital on the advice of the jail authorities, police said.

Twenty-two-year-old Naveed -who also goes by the name Abu Hanzullah-was arrested in 2014. The terrorist fired shots when the policemen were escorting a Pakistani prisoner Naveed. "The weapons are also with us", said Imtiaz Ismail, Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar.

In the chaos, one of the prisoners "snatched weapons from police and fired at the protection party".

Naveed escaped after militants opened fire inside the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital, where he had been brought along with six other prisoners for a check-up. Searches are going in the area and launched a manhunt for the detente and gunmen, the sources said.

The force who accompanied Jutt to the hospital for routine check-up was not anticipating such an attack, but the police tried to bring situation under control.

Director General of Police Shesh Paul Vaid said that the attack appeared to be well-coordinated and it looks that the communication about Naveed's movement had gone from Central jail.

Naveed's escape has raised questions about a possible security lapse, such as why the prisoners were referred for treatment to a civil hospital with "thin" security.

But while entering the hospital premises, two to three militants waiting for them opened fire injuring two cops. Two policemen have been injured and one is critical.

According to a police report Naveed had infiltrated into Kashmir along with seven other militants between October and November 2012 through Athmuqam-Farkian sector in northern Kupwara district. Also, one of the top terrorists undergoing life imprisonment, is often visited by people who consider him a "godman" and receive "taveez" (amulets) from him, sources said.

Head constable Mushtaq Ahmad and constable Babar died in the gunfight.
