'Collusion' declare as Venables jailed over photographs

James Bulger killer Jon Venables pleads guilty to possessing indecent images of children

One of toddler James Bulger's killers has been sentenced to 40 months in prison for downloading indecent images of children.

Since his release on licence, the child killer has now twice been convicted and sent back to jail over indecent images of children.

Venables, along with his school friend Robert Thompson, were both 10 years old when they murdered 2-year-old James Bulger in 1993. The little boy's body was found stripped from the waist down with 42 separate injuries, most of which were to the face and head.

On the steps of the Old Bailey in London, he said: "Sitting through this hearing today has been a new and horrendous experience for Denise, listening to the vile and horrendous behaviour Venables has engaged in yet again".

He said the sentence was "too short" and Venables would leave court "believing he got away with it". "Three years is really a farce because this is reoffending and there is a pattern to this behaviour", Johnson said, according to the Press Association.

Mr Justice Edis said some of the images found were of babies.

The judge added it is "significant" that a number of the images and films were also of serious crimes inflicted on male toddlers.

He also admitted having the paedophile manual on or before November 17 past year.

Ms Fergus says in "James Bulger: A Mother's Story": "I did say that if they weren't punished properly, then they would go on to re-offend and that's exactly what happened with Venables".

Jon Venables left and Robert Thompson were given new identities

But in November a year ago he was caught with a stash of indecent pictures of children on his computer for a second time.

They found a paedophile manual aimed at teaching how to have sex with children "safely".

Venables was released from prison in 2013 and handed a new identity, his third since coming out of jail for the James Bulger murder.

Along with the jail sentence, the judge made Venables the subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and ordered his laptop be confiscated.

Venables, who pleaded guilty to three charges, was described as "manipulative and dishonest" during sentencing. I thought doing a proper sentence in a proper prison would be justice for James.

As he was being taken to a police station, the court that Venables admitted he had "let people down" and told officers he had "stupid urges".

A report had found that Venables was a "high risk of real harm to children in the future" and has a "long-term and profound interest in children", the court heard. "I have let people down again".

"This is my own fault", he reportedly said.
