Steve Bannon might skip subpoena to appear before House panel

Steve Bannon former advisor to President Trump will not appear before the House Intelligence Committee for a scheduled interview

Steve Bannon, former Trump White House chief strategist, has been given until next Tuesday to negotiate the terms of a closed-door interview with the House Intelligence Committee's Russian Federation meddling probe, narrowly avoiding being held in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena to testify.

According to CNN, Bannon's lawyers are still waiting for clarification over whether or not executive privilege can be used for things that happened during the campaign.

"Testifying before the Special Counsel does not obviate Mr. Bannon's obligations under the subpoena issued by the Committee", Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, the committee's ranking Democrat said on Tuesday in a statement.

Last time, Bannon declared he would not answer questions about his time in the White House.

Nevertheless, senior Republican committee member Mike Conaway told reporters on Monday that he expected Bannon to comply with the subpoena.

The extension is the third time Bannon's interview has been postponed.

Rep. Mike Conaway, the Republican running the committee's Russian Federation probe, told reporters Monday evening he expected Bannon to comply with the subpoena demands of the committee and was unaware of any deal to limit the answers he would provide to the panel.

But the negotiations between the committee and the White House have reportedly stalled, as President Donald Trump's office will only permit Bannon to answer fourteen simple "yes" or "no" questions, the Associated Press reported.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted in June 2012 to hold then-Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.in contempt for failing to cooperate with a congressional inquiry into Operation "Fast and Furious" after President Barack Obama asserted executive privilege over some documents in the probe.

Sources told Fox News at the time that Bannon did not specifically invoke any sort of legal privilege, including executive privilege, to support his refusal to answer questions.

"It is not unusual for a White House to try to control the questioning of current or former employees,"Gerhardt said".
