$560M Powerball victor refuses to claim prize as she fights for anonymity

The woman, who won the Powerball jackpot last month, filed a civil complaint against the New Hampshire Lottery Commission in state court on January 29, The Boston Globe reported.

For each passing day the woman does not officially claim the jackpot, she is reportedly losing about $50,000 in interest based on a 5 percent rate.

"She is a longtime resident of New Hampshire and is an engaged community member", wrote attorney Steven Gordon from the Shaheen and Gordon law firm.

However, she also wants "the freedom to walk into a grocery store or attend public events without being known or targeted as the victor of a half-billion dollars".

She wishes to remain anonymous - but she has already put her name on the back of her ticket, meaning she can't use a trust to hide her identity. The state is holding its ground.

"The New Hampshire Lottery comprehends that triumphant a $560 million Powerball big stake is a groundbreaking event", New Hampshire Lottery Executive Director Charlie McIntyre said in an announcement.

But added: "While we respect this player's desire to remain anonymous, state statutes and lottery rules clearly dictate protocols".

In 2016, a New Hampshire family that won a $US487 million Powerball jackpot remained anonymous as lawyers for their trust claimed it. "If you signed that lottery ticket, the Lottery and the ticket are very clear that if you won, you will be part of the Lottery's public-relations machine".

But part of collecting the hefty jackpot requires identifying yourself, says The New Hampshire Lottery.

Jane Doe bought the ticket at Reeds Ferry Market in New Hampshire and the owner of the independent convenience store, Sam Safa, has been inundated with excited regulars.

Lottery officials consulted with state lawyers and said they must process the winning ticket "like any other", he said.

That was then subsumed by anxiety that her life would be ruined by the announcement that she had won $560 million.

The complaint filed references an incident in which 2009 Florida lottery victor, Abraham Shakespeare, was murdered for his $30 million, ABC News reported.

Safa said he doesn't know who the victor is, but he does know that she's a local, and he's glad a local won.
