Adam Lallana sent off for manhandling Spurs player during U23 game

Adam Lallana given red card for putting Spurs teenager in a chokehold during U23 clash

But the England global reacted furiously to a mid-air challenge by Spurs' George Marsh, 19, midway through the second half of the Premier League 2 clash, which Liverpool lost 1-0.

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana was sent off for the club's U23s on Monday evening for putting a Tottenham player in a chokehold. After going down after contesting a header with one of the Spurs youngsters, Lallana reacted angrily, pursuing the player and grabbing him round the neck. It remains to be seen what Jurgen Klopp makes of Lallana's reaction.

The 29-year-old was shown a straight red card but FA rules state a ban must be served for non-first team games.

On a brighter note, Danny Ings featured from the start for the under-23s as he builds up some much-needed match fitness while Dominic Solanke and Ben Woodburn were also in Neil Critchley's starting XI. He's clearly not mature enough to handle first team action yet.

"It's really unlucky. It was a really serious injury in the summer", Klopp explained.

"The two things that happened after his big injury were in the 10 or 15 minutes after he came on". But it didn't work, twice.

"If nobody gets injured, it's better that he can train for the next 10 days until the Southampton game, he should be ready then for sure".

As for the game itself, Liverpool would lose 1-0, having gone down to nine men late on when George Johnston picked up a second yellow. Jack Roles scored the only goal that night to help his side win the match.
