From PM Trudeau to Foreign Minister Freeland, Canada hopeful of NAFTA future

Flake NAFTA has been 'wonderful' for US

During the closing press conference for round 6 negotiations, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer emphasized a number of issues, including the balance of trade between the U.S. and Canada.

The letter comes one day after the latest round of talks to renegotiate the trade pact ended in Montreal.

Pulling out of a key trade deal may still be on the table, that's according to members of President Donald Trump's cabinet.

"Mr. President, your leadership has jump-started our economy". "The next step to advance the economy requires that we keep NAFTA in place, but modernize it to better reflect our 21st century economy". It's something we've been working on.

When the impacts are assessed using a framework that considers all of the ways in which the US economy interacts, both domestically and internationally, terminating NAFTA has negative consequences that ripple throughout the economy.

"We will work to fix bad trade deals and negotiate new ones", Trump said, adding: "We will protect American workers and American intellectual property, through strong enforcement of our trade rules". Despite pressure from GOP lawmakers and business leaders, he's kept up the criticism since taking office. The "openly and proudly protectionist", she said, with "serious reservations about the value of trade" leading to demands Canada has never agreed to before.

"The priority of Mexico's foreign policy in the short-term has been to reach an agreement with the Trump government on trade", he said. A number of lawmakers voiced opposition last week when the administration imposed tariffs on imported solar panels and washing machines.

In addition to the general positive tone, there were indications from Mexican officials that the negotiations could extend beyond the previously expected drop-dead date at the end of March, when a national Mexican election cycle begins. I think we have to be realistic.

Last Monday, she said she was not taken aback by Lighthizer's language, saying trade negotiations are always a "dramatic" process with accusations made and "high rhetoric". But on the main USA proposals, including a bid to restructure auto industry supply chains, they remain far apart. But we're hopeful the three countries will have a meaningful dialogue about some of the different ideas that are out there regarding the rules of origin.

Blunt, 47, is regularly consulted by the USA trade representative and other administration officials for feedback on negotiating proposals and how they would affect the auto industry.

Mr Trudeau's comments on Wednesday were among the most positive made by any Canadian official since talks started previous year to revamp the deal, which Mr Trump calls a disaster that killed off many United States manufacturing jobs.

In recent weeks, NAFTA supporters have flocked to the White House in an effort to educate the president on the downside of giving up on the deal. "They are exporting more to Canada than to China and Japan altogether".

Political concerns were not far from negotiators' minds in Montreal.

With serious negotiating on the hardest issues just barely begun, and national elections in Mexico and the USA later this year, conversations are turning to what might happen when the current schedule of talks concludes in March.
