Hundreds of protesters remain in jail as Iran announces release of detainees

Second woman 'arrested' in Tehran for hijab protest

Alinejad also created the campaign #whitewednesdays a year ago, which called on women to wear white in protest of the strict laws. The first woman protesting against the veil law, got the title of "girl of the revolution street", this soon turned into a hashtag, #girlsofrevolution after others joined her.

At least six women in Iran have been pictured protesting the obligatory Islamic headscarf by publicly taking off their hijabs and waving them on sticks.

Although her protest and was in women's demonstrations, the image of her act of resistance quickly spread online. I am happy with my choice but I am opposed to forced hijab and that's why I appreciate the Girls of Enghelab Street.

Iranian authorities show no signs of relenting on the hijab rule, however, and recently added 7,000 undercover agents to the country's morality police to crackdown on women not wearing the hijab properly, Fox News reported.

"That directive was an important step forward, but more or less reflected the reality on the ground in the capital where hijab has been increasingly loosely adhered to in some quarters", Gissou Nia, a human rights lawyer based in Las Angeles and focused on Iran, told Newsweek. "In all civil-rights protests with similar demands, a permanent result has been reached after a long time by respecting two principles: being [public] and peaceful".

The issue of Iran's dress code for women has emerged as a major source of tension in recent years.

Some have posted hijab-less photos on a Facebook page founded by exiled journalist Masih Alinejad, whose call for women to wear white scarves and protest the hijab on Wednesdays appears to have been behind Movahedi's protest.

The Muslim dress code, in place since the 1979 revolution, considers veiling obligatory for any female above 13 and says they should cover themselves from head to toe while disavowing any figure-hugging dress.

"I hope that my sisters continue this protest to demonstrate that women, like men, [should be] free to decide on their clothing".

Many on social media applauded and encouraged these women for standing up against rigid laws.
