USA anti-missile test fails in Hawaii

Aegis Ashore Missile Defense

It was the second failure of an SM-3 antiballistic missile interceptor since June.

A Defence Agency spokesman said: "Sailors manning the Aegis Ashore Missile defence Test Complex conducted a live-fire missile flight test on Wednesday morning".

While North Korea's nuclear weapons program is the most advanced threat, Trump has vowed to seek new sanctions on Iran for its continued development of ballistic missiles.

The Missile Defense Agency confirmed that a test had taken place, but did not comment on its outcome.

According to CNN, the test was conducted on Wednesday and failed to intercept an incoming target launched from an aircraft.

The second straight failure of the system is particularly embarrassing as the United States has been working hard to try to sell more such defensive systems overseas.

The interceptor is being developed in cooperation with Japan and is to be deployed on land as well as aboard ships.

Pyongyang has test-fired ballistic missiles on lofted trajectories into the sea around Japan multiple times, and officials said it would be very hard for Japan's current anti-missile defense systems to shoot them down if they were to threaten the country's territory.

Clairmont says he left because it was clear would be taken against agency leaders after the January 13 alert warning of an inbound missile caused panic. "It is a very expensive system and it would undesirable for the credibility of the missile to be hurt", the source said.

Officials reportedly told CNN that the Defense Department is staying mum "due, in part, to sensitivities surrounding North Korea's participation in the upcoming Olympic Games and continuing tensions with leader Kim Jong-un".

Confidence in the $36 billion missile defense system was bolstered last week by a new assessment from the Pentagon's operational testing director based on the successful interception in May of a dummy warhead.

The secretive state, led by Kim Jong-un, have vowed to strike at the USA if they feel under threat.
