Devin Nunes Slams FBI's 'Spurious' Objection to Memo's Release

Trump was overheard Tuesday night telling a Republican lawmaker he is "100 percent" in favor of releasing the memo.

The exchange was caught by television cameras filming the president after he delivered the address.

"With regard to the House Intelligence Committee's memorandum, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was provided a limited opportunity to review this memo the day before the committee voted to release it", the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

FBI Director Christopher Wray advised the White House to oppose the release of a classified GOP memo that he says includes false information.

Schiff said Republicans on the committee had officially launched an investigation of the FBI and the Justice Department, a contention that Rep. Mike Conaway of Texas, a Republican on the committee, disputed, saying the panel was simply reviewing a specific point in the memo.

Rosenstein is now overseeing the probe. The intelligence community's concerns are rooted in a fear that disclosing details of the FISA warrant process could reveal crucial elements of intelligence gathering, potentially causing foreign intelligence targets to change behavior to avoid surveillance in the future. Those lawyers would have to authorize and ultimately prepare any filing that is made.

Justice Department officials have also said releasing the memo could jeopardize classified information.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray had privately pleaded with the White House not to release the document, arguing that it would set a unsafe precedent for releasing classified information and was essentially an inaccurate attack on the FBI. ("The Republican chairman of the House intelligence committee refused to answer when a colleague asked him if he had coordinated his incendiary surveillance memo with the White House, The Daily Beast has learned.") This would be such a ludicrous, ham-handed effort to interfere clumsily and blatantly with the investigation that it might actually be true.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, also a Trump appointee, has reportedly separately warned the White House that the memo does not accurately describe how it carries out investigations.

The memo has been sent to the White House and is now in a secure facility operated by the National Security Council.

Many Republicans have argued that the FBI and the Justice Department have displayed bias against President Donald Trump in their investigation into allegations of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

After those complaints, Wray reviewed the memo over the weekend. He went on to say that that President Donald Trump's own Justice Department "says it would be extraordinarily reckless to do and then Democrats try to get the truth out and they won't let you release your memo".

He says Trump also incorrectly claimed to be vindicated past year when Nunes shared evidence with the White House of a "vast unmasking conspiracy" that allegedly involved Obama officials inappropriately making requests to uncover the identities of Trump campaign officials in intelligence reports.

It's not clear exactly what the memo says.

The FBI expressed "grave concerns" on Wednesday over a controversial surveillance memo that could be released to the public this week.

Testifying in November before the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, Page said he met with Russian government officials during a July 2016 trip he took to Moscow while he was a foreign policy adviser to Trump´s campaign. Whatever President Trump will do, Trump will do. "The House has to be in session to do that", he said. Gowdy said the memo doesn't reveal any intelligence methods but does reveal "one source".

On Saturday, The Washington Post reported that last week President Trump requested to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly that the FISA abuse memo be made public. But the same fight was already playing out behind closed doors on Monday. Trump has up to five days to block their plans, though with his endorsement, once official, lawmakers can move quickly to make the document public.
