Kenya's opposition leader Raila Odinga sworn in as ''People's'' President

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga was "sworn in" on Tuesday by his National Super Alliance party as the "people's president", two months after his bitter rival, president Uhuru Kenyatta, took the oath of office.

Nasa leader Raila Odinga holds up the Bible as he swears-in himself as the "people's president" at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.

First was an election on August 8, won by Kenyatta and then annulled in a historic decision by the Supreme Court, which ordered a re-run on October 26.

Meanwhile, the hostility by President Uhuru Kenyatta's government towards the free media continued later on Tuesday when NMG journalists were turned away from covering him at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on his arrival from a foreign trip.

On Monday, hours to the opposition event, it emerged that the government had held a meeting with some media executives and warned them of closure if they air the ceremony. "Whenever there is a crisis, there is also an opportunity".

"We have accomplished our promise to Kenyans", said Odinga before quickly departing, the packed venue emptying out in minutes.

Numerous protesters were chanting pro-Odinga slogans, waving tree branches and blowing horns and whistles. Afterwards several said they could not hear Odinga's brief address. "So we are very shocked and disappointed that this can happen with no explanation of any kind", Waruru said. "I'm very fed up with this ... government".

The crowd dispersed without the usual hype of a Nasa rally, with many expressing dissatisfaction with the whole affair.

"Raila Odinga is quite popular in the poor areas and particular groupings so it provides a potential threat to internal stability, peace and security".

"This is a lose-lose situation for both Kenyatta and Odinga and it was an entirely preventable crisis".

Though the police had said they would prohibit any illegal assemblies on Tuesday, there were no uniformed police in the park and no anti-riot officers or vehicles.

The interior minister also said the top three TV stations and some radio stations will remain shut down while being investigated for their alleged role in what he called an attempt to "subvert and overthrow" Kenyatta's government.

In 2017, over 1,000 people were killed in clashes following the 2007 election after Odinga -defeated by then - President Mwai Kibaki - claimed the vote was rigged.
