Budget session: President Kovind hopes for passage of triple talaq bill

LS Speaker and govt meet political leadership today

Following the address by the President, the economic survey will be tabled in the two Houses. He urged the political leaders to discuss the issue and try to reach a conclusion. Kovind said his government was committed to connect all villages with roads and was making efforts to double farm income by 2022. It presents a summary of the performance of the government's major development programmes undertaken during that period. "The first half is brief and will be dedicated mostly to motion of thanks to the President's speech but the triple talaq bill will be listed in the second phase", a government source told TOI.

He also made an impassioned plea for passage of the triple talaq Bill even as the opposition and the government remained at loggerheads on the contentious issue.

PTI reported that in addition to the triple talaq bill, a bill for Other Backward Classes Commission constitutional status will be the government's priorities during the Budget Session of Parliament. "After the law comes into force, Muslim daughters and sisters can live a life free of fear and dignity".

"More than 18 crore poor have been covered under the "Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana" and "Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana" and about Rs 2,000 crore has been paid out as claims".

He said UDAN scheme has been started to provide air connectivity to smaller cities. The government sought the cooperation to ensure the success of the Budget session.

Kovind said for the first time since Independence Muslim women, above the age of 45 years, would be able to go on Haj in groups of four, without being accompanied by a male relative. In addition, under the "National AYUSH Mission", traditional methods of treatment, such as Yoga and Ayurveda are being promoted.

At the all-party ahead of the Budget session, the Prime Minister on Sunday, said the Budget session is very important and the government takes very sincerely the suggestions given about it by opposition during discussion in all party meeting. "Therefore, a sustained debate is required on the subject of simultaneous elections and all political parties need to arrive at a consensus on this issue".

Observing that the people were concerned about frequent elections in one part of the country or another, Kovind said regular polls "adversely impact the economy and development".
