The Agenda on Politics: Special episode - Patrick Brown's resignation

The Ontario Conservative Leader Has Been Accused Of Sexual Misconduct By Two Women

"He deserves his day in court, but no person can lead a political party in this province with allegations like these hanging over his head".

On Friday morning, Fedeli was named interim leader of the Ontario PCs by the party's caucus following Thursday's resignation of Patrick Brown following allegations of sexual misconduct.

He has called them "false", but says he does not want them to distract from the PC Party's effort to defeat Kathleen Wynne's Liberal government.

In a statement on Thursday, Barrie police said they haven't received any complaints regarding sexual misconduct, or any other allegations involving Brown. "They have the final say the way our constitution works".

CTV News dropped the bombshell in a report that aired on Wednesday night, presenting two women who claimed Brown made inappropriate sexual advances while the women were still teenagers and Brown was a Member of Parliament. She alleges that she was invited to Brown's house after a party, where he gave her alcohol and later forced himself on her.

Brown, who has denied the allegations from the two women, was not at the meeting.

Asked if it would change her campaign for this year's provincial election, she said it was not about her or her campaign, but about two women who courageously came forward with their allegations.

CTV News said it had viewed records of correspondence between Brown and the women. Neither have been proven in court.

She said Brown could not continue with the election fast approaching, but no decision had been made on naming a new leader.

Ben Levitt and Donna Skelly say they'll campaign as usual after the Brown bombshell Wednesday - one that MPP Ted McMeekin called "not a fun time for anyone".

After hearing the allegations, Brown's closest aides had also resigned.

It's been a turmoil-filled last couple of days for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.

Meanwhile, Niagara Centre PC candidate April Jeffs said it took courage for the women who are accusing Brown to come forward and speak out.

"To me, it's most important that we listen to people from Brantford-Brant and find out what their needs are and what they're looking for in an MPP", he said. "Sexual misconduct and sexual harassment have no place in Canadian society". Brown brought her in from Ottawa to hone the party's message heading into an election year. MacLeod, Christine Elliott and Caroline Mulroney were mentioned as possible candidates to take on Wynne in June.

"Earlier today, all three of us became aware of allegations about Patrick Brown. He did not accept that advice", his chief of staff, deputy campaign manager and campaign manager said in a joint statement.

In his letter, Bennett urged the party, which is believed to have spent more than $1.5 million on legal fees and settlements involving candidate nomination contests, to stop wasting money.

His press secretary Nick Bergamini also quit, and tweeted that it is in the best interest of the PC party that he immediately step down.

News of the shuffling of top party players comes as the PCs try to contain another internal clash over whether to hold an open leadership race in the coming months or go into the June 7 provincial election with Fedeli as leader.

"Mr. Brown is entitled to a legal defense and due process, but he can not lead us into an election as a result of these allegations", the deputy leaders.
