Ikea Founder Dies at 91

Court rules Puigdemont must return to Spain for re-election

IKEA, which is now headquartered in the Netherlands, has since become the largest furniture retailer in the world.

"Ingvar Kamprad was a unique entrepreneur who had a big impact on Swedish business and who made home design a possibility for the many not just the few", national news agency TT quoted Lofven saying.

"Ingmar Kamprad died in calm at home" in sourn Sweden, announced on Twitter Ikea, an empire that now employs 190,000 people in various parts of world and generates a turnover of 36.3 billion euros. From matches, he expanded to selling fish, Christmas tree decorations, seeds and later ball-point pens and pencils. He pioneered flat-pack furniture that would fit snugly inside its box, saving space and money.

"On some Sundays in Britain", the Guardian newspaper reported in 2004, "almost twice as many people visit [Ikea] as attend church; it has been calculated that 10% of Europeans now alive were conceived in one of Ikea's beds".

In 2017, 403 Ikea stores in nearly 50 countries received more than 900 million visitors, and the chain generated sales of $47.6 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Kamprad created products such as the Poang and Billy bookcase and fed customers by selling millions of Swedish meatballs.

Kamprad was also a controversial figure. Its complex business structure has drawn controversy and the European Commission said a year ago that it had launched an investigation into Ikea's tax arrangements.

Kamprad was 91, and his peaceful death came after a short illness.

But Kamprad lived modestly, buying his clothes at thrift shops, driving an ageing Volvo, and bringing a lunch box to work. His father was a German-born farmer, and his mother was a Swedish homemaker. Only a year later he began advertising in local newspapers and using a milk delivery van to deliver his products.

Who was Ingvar Kamprad?

Kamprad reportedly had an estimated net worth of $58.7 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, and was ranked as the world's eighth-richest person. She served on several nonprofit boards for organizations affiliated with Ikea, and was credited by Kamprad with sacrificing long stretches of their marriage so that he could focus on the company.
