Padmaavat: Tepid response to bandh call in Guj; film not shown

Many said that by staging a violent protest against the period film, Karni Sena has actually done a disservice to the Rajput cause, as the film is an "overdose" of Rajput valour. The governments in these states are in the hands of the BJP. In Gujarat, a bandh call given by Karni Sena and other anti- Padmavaat organisations evoked a mixed response. Shopkeepers in Udaipur are apprehensive of the aggression being displayed by members of the Karni Sena and the inability of the administration or police to do anything about it. Shops are being shut gradually across the city. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also condemned the attack on the school bus. When there is already a statutory censor board to do the job how can the Rajput Karni Sena or any organization appropriate to themselves the right to censor and ban a film passed by the board? No one was injured in the incident, they said.

However, now that the film is making such good money, we hope that all those protesting against it can see the bright side and accept the film. "The local management has told us that the law and order situation is not conducive", its president Deepak Asher said. Last but not the least, they don't even spare children and attack them mercilessly by throwing rocks at them. The memorandum also requests that "Ghumar" song not be played, sung or performed on Republic Day, in any of the districts schools, colleges or other institutions. "This is a plot being created by politicians, who wish to weaken our peaceful protest".

According to reports, surveillance and security in and around Kolkata's cinema halls have been stepped up ahead of the screening of Padmavat.

Groups critical of the film, set to be released on Thursday, have accused its director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, of distorting history by portraying a Muslim ruler as the "lover" of the Hindu Queen Padmavati of the Rajput warrior clan.

The state government, however, said it was ready to provide security if the theatre owners wanted to screen the movie. The most worrisome aspect of this shameful violence over a bonafide film is that it seems to be the most acute in the States where Assembly polls are due either this year (Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh) or in 2019 (Haryana).

"A mere hundred people can not create some problem and the state can not say there is a law-and-order problem", the court had told Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.
