Budget Bickering Shuts Down Parts of US Government

CQ Roll Call

The current government funding expired on Friday midnight as the Senate failed to advance a stopgap spending bill, which had passed the House of Representatives and would fund the government through February 16.

It was not clear whether enough Democrats would vote on Monday to advance the temporary spending bill and end the government shutdown.

Now Democrats are needed if it is to pass in the Senate - but they want illegal immigration and weak borders.

Indeed, the one powerful bargaining tool Democrats are clinging to is immigration protection for children who entered the United States illegally. "If stalemate continues, Republicans should go to 51% (Nuclear Option) and vote on real, long term budget, no" continuing spending resolution.

Asked on ABC's "This Week" if he could say whether the government would reopen on Monday, Senator Richard J. Durbin of IL, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, demurred.

Chuck Schumer, the senior Democrat in the Senate, accused the president of zig-zagging over immigration and added: 'Negotiating with President Trump is like negotiating with Jell-O'.

While the two men said they remained committed to reaching a deal, the shutdown formally began on Saturday, the first anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration.

"Let's end this foolishness", McConnell said on the Senate floor. About a third, 31%, said they would hold Democrats responsible.

Speaking to MSNBC on Saturday, the New York Democrat stated he hoped the impasse would "end as soon as possible, as soon as our Republican friends get their act together".

"If he does not, of course, and I expect he will, he will have breached the trust of not only the Democratic senators, but members of his own party as well", Schumer said.

The critical Senate vote was preceded by a day of high drama, with attempts to strike new deals, all of which failed.

Not to mention that Trump is suggesting Congress pass a permanent spending package - the legislative language for which doesn't even exist.

Republicans have just a one-seat majority in the Senate and therefore have to lure some Democrats to their side to get a 60-vote super-majority to bring the stop-gap-funding motion forward.

A deal appeared likely on Friday afternoon, when Trump seemed close to an agreement with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer on a measure to prevent the expulsion of undocumented migrants who arrived in the country as children.

This is the first modern government shutdown with Congress and the White House controlled by the same party.
