Australia, New Zealand to meet in Sydney women's 7s final

Etene Nanai makes a run down the sideline against Australian Schools Barbarians match against New Zealand Schoolboys at Knox Grammar School in Sydney Australia on 2 October 2017

The New Zealand women's sevens team have marched through to a trans-Tasman showdown with Australia in the final of the Sydney rugby sevens tournament.

The match was played nearly exclusively in the Spanish half, aside from a late raid on the Australian line to close the first half, with Australia still yet to concede a point in four games.

Scotland had the upper hand at the start of the second stanza with Scott Riddell collecting an offload to score with five minutes to go and a Max McFarland score two minutes later, put the Scots in front for the first time in the match, before Lucas scored the match victor.

"They're a very physical side, they're a good side and they're going to be hurting from that defeat too, so we know what we're going to come up against tomorrow", Friend said.

"The first game on Friday was a good way to get into the tournament and to get used to the conditions out here". We really want to win in Sydney as we have not won a tournament for a while.

New Zealand, winners of the last World Series leg in Cape Town last month, were edged-out in a thrilling Group A clash with Fiji in which they led 17-14 before conceding a try with the last play of the game to lose 19-17.

"Finishing on a result like that to the United States of America, a team that's beaten us twice over the previous year or so, shows a lot that our team is coming together", Woodman said.

"Reflecting on why we didn't go so well previous year. just physically and mentally we were really flat and weren't performing.

It was a solid performance against Spain who are a pretty tough team and then we were fairly comfortable against Papua New Guinea who were a bit of an unknown so the boys did well to adapt", said England Sevens captain Tom Mitchell.

"Any time you can keep a skilful, fast and physical team like Russian Federation scoreless that's really credit to us and we're really proud of that". It's exciting that they're mixing the boys and girls together, there's no back field, we're all playing on that number one field.

She scored another as the Black Ferns beat Canada in the semifinals to book a place in the final against Australia on Sunday.

The final will be one of three women's matches played between men's fixtures, at 2.37pm AEDT.
