Vince McMahon bringing back 'reimagined' XFL

EXCLUSIVE: WHEN THE XFL RETURN SEASON WILL KICK OFF AND MORE | PWInsider.com

WWE founder and chairman Vince McMahon announced Thursday he is giving a professional football league another go.

The league is slated to kick off in 2020 and will consist of eight teams, 40-man rosters, and 10 weeks of regular season play, leading to two semifinals and a championship game.

Rumors of the return of the XFL had been swirling since December, when Brad Shepard reported that McMahon was considering a revival of the league and was aiming to make an announcement in late January.

McMahon hinted he'd be open to bringing back the league in an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary called "This Was The XFL", which aired previous year.

"You want someone who does not have any criminality whatsoever associated with them", McMahon said. He said he didn't know if Trump would support the league but said that the league will have nothing to do with politics or social issues. McMahon said the league will own the teams under a single entity rather than follow the franchise ownership model that many professional leagues follow today.

McMahon was also asked about the problem football players are having with brain injuries caused by playing the game, McMahon said that part of reimagining the game would be looking at ways to make it "as safe as possible and still be football. we will bring in experts and heed their advice". McMahon said the XFL will not compete with the National Football League for players, but will target ones who just miss catching on with an National Football League team. Some were excited about seeing the return of one the XFL, some were confused as to why it was happening and some simply questioned the logistics of the league being able to return.

One of the main problems with the ill-fated previous XFL was timing - the first games were played a year after the concept was announced.

Huge news is breaking in the football world this morning and it has nothing to do with the NFL or the Super Bowl.

Like other leagues that have attempted to create an alternative to the NFL, the XFL struggled.

He even ended his preamble portion of the press conference by issuing a call to action to fans by actually saying "any ideas you may have, send them to us because we'll be listening".

One mark of the new league, McMahon said, will be faster games. In the press release, it was stated that many aspects of the new league are still in development such as player salary. This will be a different and better football game than fans are accustomed to.

The wrestling promotion and a rep for Alpha did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for further details on the coming announcement.

Now McMahon says he wants to reimagine the game. Stating that the XFL is still a work in progress, he's happy to listen to the audience, especially on the rules they want to see introduced in the game.
