Colorado sheriff's deputy shot and killed outside Denver

Officer shot and killed north of Denver; suspect at large

More than 12 hours after an Adams County sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while responding to an assault-in-progress call, law enforcement continues the manhunt for two suspects.

Brighton police officers wear a black ribbon over their badge and fight back tears as the hearse carrying Deputy Heath Gumm arrived at the Adams County Coroner's office.

That suspect, whose name has not been released by the sheriff's office, was taken into custody at the scene, according to deputies.

Gumm is the second Colorado law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in the past month. A Douglas County deputy died New Year's Eve during a domestic disturbance in Highlands Ranch.

An Adams County sheriff's deputy died January 24 after a shooting near Skyview High School.

There is a large police presence in the area.

Deputies had been chasing the man in an "assault in progress" call about 7 p.m. The only suspect description available for the pair is that they are light-skinned, black males or dark-skinned, Hispanic males.

Citing the needs of an ongoing investigation, police advised local residents to exercise caution and take precautionary measures such as staying away from windows or avoiding certain parts of the city. A Douglas County Sheriff's deputy was killed on December 31 in a standoff in a Denver suburb where four other deputies and two civilians were also shot. When deputies caught up with the man, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking Gumm in the chest, the sheriff's office said.

Authorities say they were responding to a call in the area.

The Sheriff's Office says the "area is to be considered risky".

Hundreds of police officers in Colorado joined a procession on Wednesday night mourning a fallen comrade after they learned he had succumbed to injuries sustained in a shooting earlier that evening. Three other deputies and a Castle Rock police officer were injured in the ambush shooting.
