De Blasio, other mayors boycott Trump meeting after sanctuary cities threat

Grammys Hold Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for New York Townhouse With Mayor de Blasio, Neil Portnow

New York City is suing eight companies that make or distribute prescription opioids, accusing them of fueling a deadly and nationwide epidemic of overdoses.

The defendants include Allergan, Johnson & Johnson, Purdue Pharma and Teva, and distributors such as AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson. "It's time for hold the companies accountable for what they've done to our City, and help save more lives".

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio abruptly canceled his participation in a White House meeting on infrastructure with President Donald Trump and dozens of other city leaders, protesting Justice Department immigration policies he described as racist.

The city is claiming that opioid manufacturers have burdened the health and finances of New York's government by employing deceptive marketing to sell inordinate amounts of risky and addictive drugs to citizens.

"That said, we deny the allegations contained in this lawsuit and intend to vigorously defend the Company".

The city claims the "false perception" manufacturers sought to create was perpetuated through a "coordinated, sophisticated and highly deceptive promotion and marketing campaign" - including unbranded messaging that the city claims evaded "extensive regulatory framework governing branded communications", the city says those communications started in the late 1990's became "more aggressive" from around 2006 until today.

The success of that settlement - the largest civil litigation settlement in USA history - may suggest some optimism in the efforts of cities and states to target pharmaceutical companies.

In 2016, there were 116 overdose deaths on Staten Island, according to data from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The Democratic mayor has been an outspoken critic of Trump.

More than 1,100 people died from opioid-induced overdoses in 2016.

NY is not the first city to take legal action against Big Pharma for its alleged role in the opioid crisis.

By suing major manufacturers and distributors of prescription opioids, New York City has joined hundreds of municipalities across the state and the country that are taking steps to hold these companies accountable for their role in the opioid crisis.

Tuesday's filing follows a suit the city leveled against oil companies, similarly accusing them of contributing to climate change, which the mayor announced on January 10.
