USA approves controversial tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels

Whirlpool Says It's Adding Jobs in Wake of Trump Tariff Decision

US President Donald Trump on Monday approved solar tariffs starting at 30% and gradually falling to 15% over the next four years.

Chinese officials have repeatedly accused Trump of jeopardising worldwide trade regulation by imposing penalties under United States law instead of pursuing a WTO complaint. Those countries export the bulk of washers to the United States.

Wang pointed out the U.S. trade remedies in recent years had overprotected American sectors, and the latest decision not only caused harm to the industries' healthy development, but further exacerbated a hard global trade environment.

Supporters hope the tariff will encourage increased domestic solar manufacturing.

German Finance Minister Peter Altmaier told reporters in Brussels that the European Union opposed protectionism and said that the measures would make products more expensive for Americans.

In these two cases, the Trump administration invoked a trade law from 1974 that was last used in 2001.

"Anybody who is thinking about buying a washing machine should do it right away", said Gary Hufbauer, a trade expert at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

China is "making great contributions" to trade, said a ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying.

In 2013, the Commerce Department imposed duties on South Korean washing machine makers Samsung and LG in response to Whirlpool's complaints that its rivals were selling their products in the USA below the cost of production and were receiving government subsidies. The tariff allows 2.5 gigawatts of unassembled solar cells to be imported tariff-free in each year.

Mr Trump has talked about taking the action ever since coming to office.

A 30% tariff on modules could raise the cost of residential rooftop solar systems by ~4%, the cost of distributed commercial solar projects by 6% and the cost of utility-scale solar projects by 10%, ClearView Energy Partners calculates. The US Trade Representative also stated that it will "engage in discussions among interested parties that could lead to positive resolution of the separate antidumping and countervailing duty measures now imposed on Chinese solar products and USA polysilicon".

The decisions in the two "Section 201" safeguard cases followed findings by the U.

The decision is a "great loss" for USA workers and consumers, Samsung said on its Web site. China has been an intermittent foe of Trump's on trade. Every nation will be impacted by the new levies, though they're in-line with expectations, said Liu Yiyang, deputy secretary-general of China Photovoltaic Industry Association.

Mexico said Trump's decision not to exclude it from the measures was "regrettable".

A filing published by the WTO on January 12 showed Seoul had already asked for authorization to impose annual trade sanctions worth at least $711 million on the United States, in response to the dispute over washing machines.

"Ironically, the very jobs we all want to grow, American manufacturing jobs, will retract as the number of projects are scaled back significantly", Hopper wrote in the letter sent on January 17". Samsung Electronics advanced 1.9 percent.
