'Mudbound' cinematographer makes Oscars history

The 2018 Oscars are set to be a historic occasion: Rachel Morrison has received the first nomination for a female cinematographer for her work in Mudbound.

Directed by Dee Rees, the historical drama - starring Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, Jason Mitchell, Rob Morgan, Jason Clarke, and supporting actress nominee Mary J. Blige - traveled the festival circuit late a year ago, additionally becoming Netflix's first fiction title to score multiple Oscar nominations outside the documentary categories.

Morrison recently wrapped her most high-profile project to date, Ryan Coogler's Marvel superhero movie "Black Panther", due in theaters next month. "I think that once you see 50% of us [in the industry], you'll see a lot more nominations this time of year".

While she did earn a directing nomination, like Campion she was only rewarded for her screenplay.

The talented cinematographer is best known for her work on Jennifer Aniston's Cake, the biographical drama surrounding the events leading up to the death of Oscar Grant in Fruitvale Station, and the psychological thriller Sound of My Voice - all films which made their way through film festivals before being picked up by major studios. She faces off against Roger Deakins for "Blade Runner 2049", Bruno Delbonnel for "Darkest Hour", Hoyte van Hoytema for "Dunkirk" and Dan Laustsen for "The Shape of Water".
